The Blood War ended with the rise of Homer and the Biting of the Donut, and among the sixteen planes of the Wheel, Hell and the Abyss did not survive with their hearts intact. The Abyss no longer spews forth an endless supply of malevolence, and from the normal angle of approach, it has essentially been drained, leaving plenty of demonic encrustation behind but lacking any kind of growth or activity. Its upper layers can be nearly as safe as the Outlands, especially surrounding MoTrak and the mining incursions. The material of the plane itself has certain unique alchemical properties derived from a universe which has once formed an infection on this region, and there are Abyssal artifacts to be found with as much as half their original power and yet merely a tenth of their original sentience and malice!

MoTrak is essential for easy access, as the route through the Outlands passes through numerous walls of spatial distortions known as The Serpent's Coils, understood to be the body of Homer, the Great Devourerer, wrapping around the wheel through that area just to one side of ourselves, in a direction we cannot see. Airships big enough for any kind of freight inevitably spin out of control attempting this approach, while the train simply enjoys an Escheresque roller coaster ride for a few hundred miles.
